Sometimes the idea of changing habits and setting new goals can feel like a heavy burden. I personally, am no stranger to the shackles of “self-improvement”. But achievements and changes are pointless if you’re all the while in bondage to self-blame and the pressures of unreasonable (or unnecessary!) expectations. Its easy to fixate on the most “evident” changes we want to make, pouring our efforts into quick fixes and circumstantial manipulation. But regardless of our best intentions, our honest ignorance or conscious avoidance, such efforts are futile if they don’t produce freedom.
With one year closing and another just beginning, ’tis the season for choosing how to best spend your efforts in the coming months. In the fitness world, it’s known as the annual rush– a high-volume turnout of eager exercisers packing out the gym, determined to resolve their New year’s goals. Despite the frenzy of fresh ambition, the months that follow often see an equally substantial and frustrating fall-off. If you, like myself, have been unfortunate enough to experience it, I encourage you to consider the following:
The key to your fitness (in all aspects physical and spiritual) is first and foremost your freedom. It may be as simple as focusing less on what you need to obtain, and more on what you need to let go. To increase in freedom, you must decrease in fear. Start by determining what mindset obstacles you must remove. What are your personal barriers and strongholds? Develop a strategy for removing them, find the courage to let them go, and then REPLACE those obstacles with aides… habits and ideas that HELP you progress.
In 2018 I’ve decided that rather than white-knuckle my way forward, I’m releasing control, opening my hands to receive something new, and all the freedom that comes from fearlessly opening a new door. Easier said then done? Perhaps. But a new perspective is most certainly critical for a free and fresh start.

Yes, I like that perspective! the past is just that, the past, You don’t live there anymore. Look forward to what lie ahead, just like opening a new gift at a birthday party. ;0)
